Sava's main area houses the all important beach bar, serving delicious cocktails, and the dining areas, which provide the setting for an exquisite culinary feast comprising of in-season local produce as well as a combination of traditional seafood barbecued or how we affectionately refer to as "Braai'ed" to perfection, resulting in a wonderfully protracted affair in a calm and peaceful, yet indulgently luxurious layout. All meals can be crafted to suit any dietary Requirements.
The lodge is connected via winding wooden walkways which delicately cut through the sparse coastal vegetation carpeting the goldenly hued dunes. The beach, a mere few meters from your room offers warm waters with peeling waves perfect for those bodyboarding enthusiast .
Humpback whales frequent the area during the season. Sava is the prefect vantage point for watching these magnificent giants. This truly is a unique experience, from the sounds to sights, all with out leaving the lodge.
Whale sharks and dolphins can often be spotted around the area. There is a shoal of seahorses to be found in the neighbouring estuary, an ideal for spot for a bit of snorkelling. One can easily expect to see sea cucumbers, puffer fish, lion fish and a verity of other species of fish while in the water.
Once you have completed some "fun-in-the-sun" and water-based activities. We invite you to meander up to the lodge for some wonderful relaxation around the pool area. Take a dip in the refreshing water and quench your thirst at the bar which is full accessible from right inside the pool via the swim-up bar and order a tropical cocktail all while still in the water !
Basic snorkelling equipment and bodyboards are available at the lodge
Sava Dunes is enviably located on a remote part of the Inhambane coastline in Mozambique. Located in Southern area of Mozambique, Sava Dunes can be found between the village of Tofo (roughly 5.5 km ) and Barra beach (1.5 km).
Sava being built atop the sand dunes means the vista's afforded ample opportunities to watch the dappled sunrises over the ocean from the comfort of your cottage, keep an eye on the ocean to spot local ocean life.
The location? It's wild, remote and pristine!
In terms of getting to the lodge, we recommend flying. Sava Dunes is a self-drive destination, but only seasoned 4x4’ers should attempt the beach road access. The roads are sandy and the location is remote. It requires a certain level of skill to navigate the dune landscape.
If you do wish to self-drive and do not have a 4x4 we do have an alternative parking option that can be booked for a daily charge, with return lodge transfers as an option.
You can either fly into Inhambane or Vilanculos. Inhambane is the closest airport at a mere 40 minute drive to the lodge. The lodge can arrange airport transfers for you. These road transfers are at an extra cost and will need to be arranged along with your booking.
Mozambique’s National Airline (LAM) has flights to Inhambane from OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, both direct on certain days and connecting flights from Mozambique’s capital city Maputo.
Both LAM and SA Airlink offer flights to Vilanculos.
